Legendary jazz band Sun Ra Arkestra takes the stage on September 28th. Sun Ra, the band’s creator and composer, was a longtime friend and performer at SOB’s. His last show before his passing was here, and we are honored to bring his Arkestra here to celebrate John Gilmore’s birthday.

Founded by Sun Ra in the mid-1950s, the Sun Ra Arkestra is known worldwide for their live shows that combine big-band swing, space-age jazz, singing, dancing, chanting and Afro-pageantry. The Arkestra has been at the forefront of Afro-futurism since their inception.

Sun Ra was amongst the earliest pioneers of the synthesizer and the free jazz revolution of the 1960s, sending a strong spiritual and musical message to his Arkestra of positive vibrations and music to make the world a better place.

The Arkestra have recorded more than 100 albums. Their 2020 album “Swirling” was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Big Band Jazz Ensemble recording. After more than 60 years the band continue to travel the globe on their Inter-Galactic tour. Recent highlights include shows at the Kennedy Center with Solange, The Berlin Opera House, the Burlington Jazz Festival and a New York City show at Radio City Music Hall. The Sun Ra Arkestra 2023 schedule included the Big Ears Festival, four nights at SF Jazz, a US West Coast Tour, a Canadian tour and a tour of Italy.
