WBAI 99.5 FM and Con Sabor Latino’s Montuneando con Marysol are proud to present our semi-annual live music fundraiser in tribute to an institution in Cuban music, LA ORQUESTA ARAGÓN, in celebration of their 80th Anniversary on Friday, October 25th, 2019 at 7pm. Heralded as the “mother of all charangas” and hailing from Cienfuegos, Cuba, legendary orchestra La Orquesta Aragón continues today under the leadership of violinist Rafael Lay, Jr., son of former Aragón leader Rafael Lay, Sr.
La Orquesta Aragón has remained a model for musicians of any genre to follow, establishing a long and illustrious musical trajectory. Cementing its place in history as a foundation for standards in Danzon, Mambo, Cha Cha Cha, Charanga, and Chaonda, La Orquesta Aragón is a singular global treasure. For this special concert, four popular New York musical groups: Sweet Plantain, Son del Monte, Siglo 20, and the legendary Típica 73 will pay tribute to La Orquesta Aragón, performing standards and original music honoring the orchestra’s 80 years in music. Musical homage will be made to living legend and master Pupi Legarretta. A posthumous tribute to violinist and trombonist Lewis Kahn will also be rendered.
